Ignorância do outro e ignorância de si: sobre a falta de historicidade e rigor acadêmico da concepção hegemônica da história da filosofia
Ignorance of the other and self-ignorance: On the lack of historicity and academic rigor in the hegemonic conception of the history of philosophy
Abstract
In our article, we seek to show how the hegemonic conception of philosophy and its history, namely that according to which philosophy only arose in Greece and is exclusively Western, is fundamentally based on two ignorances: anignorance of the other and a self-ignorance. In relation to ignorance of the other, we seek to show how those who defend the hegemonic conception of philosophy are not based on any rigorous academic study of non-Western traditions, making claims about their difference from “Western philosophy” that are anchored in a common sense understanding of them and in a non-existent or extremely superficial reading of the intellectual production of these cultures. In relation to ignorance about oneself, we seek to show how those who defend the hegemonic conception of philosophy and its history treat this conception as a kind of “eternal truth” about philosophy, ignoring the fact that this conception arose and consolidated itself at a very precise and recent historical moment, so that it does not faithfully portray how “Western” philosophy itself has understood and conceived of itself and of philosophy throughout history. Thus, we seek to show that the main reasons why the hegemonic conception of philosophy has been consolidated are ideological, and not because of some supposed historical rigor that it would demonstrate, since, on the contrary, such rigor is entirely lacking. In this way, we hope to establish that there is an urgent need to conduct the debate on philosophy and its history in an academically serious and rigorous manner, not based on inaccurate and common sense perceptions of non-Western traditions, as well as the “Western” philosophical tradition itself.
