Abstract

This article offers a philosophical and historical critique of the thesis that only the Western European tradition can be properly considered philosophical, as defended by Marco Aurélio Werle. Drawing on intellectual traditions from Antiquity, medieval Islamic, Jewish, and Christian philosophy, as well as contemporary intercultural perspectives, the text challenges the rigid separation between philosophy and religion and the notion of philosophy as a closed system. It argues that philosophy should not be defined solely by its continuity within Western tradition, but recognized as a plural field of rationalities, open to dialogue
with historically diverse forms of thought. An intercultural and less normative hermeneutics is proposed as an alternative to canonical exclusivity.

Keywords: intercultural philosophy; Eurocentrism; religion and philosophy; plural rationality; philosophical tradition
