Abstract

This study contemplates two questions in Heloísa de Argenteuil (1090- 1163/64). What is the meaning of Philosophy? Is the human female naturally capable of exercising philosophy? The examination is divided into three parts. First, it presents a general introduction to the questions from other authors. These authors show that, regarding the second question, Heloisa is not a rarity. The second part, in turn, articulates the notions of “philosophy” and “rationality” by speculating whether, for Heloisa, Marcela de Roma (325-410) practised philosophy. Finally, in the third part, it analyzes two different readings of Aspasia by Miletus (470-410/400), one by Cicero (On the invention 1, 31), who considers Aspasia only as an orator, and another by Heloísa (Letter II) according to which, in addition to being an orator, Aspasia would also be a philosopher.
