Abstract

This article aims to present the general aspects of sensualism apprehended by Rousseau. At the same time is our goal to indicate how this author associates sensualism to educational, moral, religious and political issues, not only with the epistemological foundations, whilst discussing the influence of sensations on the subjective constitution of an individual. In doing so, he strongly criticizes the theses of French sensualism, observed in Helvetius and Condillac introduced in their
main works: De L’Esprit, De L’Homme and Traité des Sensations. From Rousseau, we focus mainly on the texts Emile: or On Education, Discourse on the Origin of Inequality and Essay on the Origin of Languages.

Key-words: sensation, sensualism, knowledge, subjectivity
