Abstract

The critique undertaken by the German thinker Friedrich Nietzsche about the problem of antifinalism in the thought of the seventeenth-century Dutch thinker Benedictus de Spinoza will be analyzed by us, mainly, from the perspective of two works: Beyond Good and Evil and The Gay Science. In addition, with the help of Nietzschean and Spinoza commentators, we will analyze some excerpts from a letter and Posthumous Fragments by the German author about Spinoza and his problem
about the finalism represented in the ontology of his masterpiece Ethics. With this, we will seek to understand how Nietzsche pointed out Spinoza’s theoretical insufficiencies regarding his critique of final causes, or the finalism, which would
regulate the world, as well as to explain the extent to which his critique of Spinoza proved to be inconsequential in some points of his philosophy.

Keywords: Spinoza; Nietzsche; finalism; philosophy.
