Abstract

The Chinese social credit system (SCS) has become in recent years a source of curiosity, concern and, mostly, misguided views and excesses concerning what is going on in a country so far away that owns a culture so different from the so-called “western culture”. To avoid increasing confusion already existent in sufficient quantity regarding this subject, this article intends to accomplish a rather simple, albeit of vital importance, task: to understand in general how some Chinese philosophical currents can be employed to interpret the existence and functioning of SCS to avoid the error of trying to observe topics related to other peoples through the bias of liberal democracy. To accomplish this goal, three will be the chosen currents: Legalism, Mohism and Confucianism. We will analyze some of the main authors of these (Han Fei, 2003; Mozi, 2013; Mencius, 2008; Zhu Xi, 2019; and
others) seeking to list key views to each of them that can dialogue with the social credit initiative, either in agreement or as a form of criticism. This comparative analysis thus aims to establish the inspirations of the system and the challenges it may face ahead.
