Nietzsche’s Reading Strategies: The Case of August Schlegel

Abstract

Nietzsche commenced his engagement with the Romantic thinker August Schlegel during his formative years at Pforta, and subsequently returned to him on numerous occasions during the period of writing The Birth of Tragedy. The young deals with various writings of this thinker, both his studies on art theory, published in Lessons on Fine Arts, and his studies on Greek tragedy, published in Lessons on Dramatic Art. In this paper, I intend to reflect on Nietzsche’s sources and Nietzsche’s very peculiar relationship with his sources by examining various reading records, such as excerpts, notes, unpublished writings, and their unfolding in the published work.
