Abstract

Based on the research already conducted by Nietzsche-Forschung, especially by Mazzino Montinari, Giorgio Colli, Giuliano Campioni, and Karl Pestalozzi, this article aims to develop and elucidate to what extent Nietzsche’s engagement and confrontation with the works of Paul Bourget and Charles Baudelaire contribute to the final formulations of his theory of decadence, as presented in his works from 1888, particularly in “The Case of Wagner.” It argues that Nietzsche places the concept of decadence at the center of his later philosophy as a fundamental strategy for his greater task, the transvaluation of values.
