Abstract

In this text I present a reply to Marco Aurélio Werle, defending the Sarvastivada philosophy of Indian Buddhism as a rigorous and systematic philosophical tradition, which meets the criteria of philosophy proposed by Werle, but which he ignores due to a Eurocentric bias. The text also criticizes the intellectual dishonesty of Hegel and his followers, such as Žižek, for disqualifying Buddhism without an in-depth study, linking this stance to colonialism, racism and orientalism. It argues that the Sarvastivada tradition combines logical analysis and soteriological efficacy, with a history of debates and developments that make it central to Buddhist philosophy. In addition, it refutes the idea of an “early Buddhism” and highlights the importance of the Abhidharma Sarvastivada as a basis for later schools such as Madhyamaka and Yogacara. The text concludes by emphasizing the need to confront Eurocentrism and recognize the philosophical value of non-European traditions.

Keywords: Eurocentrism, intellectual dishonesty, Buddhist philosophy, non-European philosophies.
