Abstract

Freud claimed to have discovered the meaning of dreams and created a scientific method to uncover it. This claim has generally been accepted within and outside of the field of psychoanalysis. However, a long history of scientific research on dreams exists, including physiological and psychological studies. Many of Freud’s theoretical e methodological insights were formulated in these studies and were used to develop the psychoanalytic conception of dream phenomena. This history is indispensable for understanding and contextualizing Freud’s theory but remains largely unknown in the histories of both psychoanalysis and scientific ideas. This article aims to highlight the importance of this history and present a preliminary overview of these research traditions and their relationship to Freud’s thinking.
