Abstract

This article proposes a reading of Jacques Lacan’s text “Seminar on ‘The Purloined Letter’” (Le séminaire sur “La lettre volée”, 1956) in light of the problem of truth. The aim is to examine how, in this inaugural text of the Écrits, truth is articulated to the structure of the signifier, the position of the subject, and the logic of deception, establishing a decisive shift from the classical conception of truth as correspondence. By demonstrating that truth emerges only as an effect of language, Lacan establishes a new regime of thought within psychoanalysis, in which knowledge is crossed by lack and the subject is constituted in relation to the symbolic Other.

Keywords: Truth; Subject; Signifier; Psychoanalysis; Jacques Lacan.
