UPDATING THE SENSIBLE: POLITICS AND ART IN GÊ VIANA’S COLLAGES

This article aims to analyze the works of the Maranhão artist Gê Viana, particularly the series Traumatic Update of Debret. These are collages based on the works of the French artist that portray the daily life and slavery in Rio de Janeiro during the first decades of the 19th century. We seek to approach Viana's work from the perspective of J. Rancière's reflections. What we intend to argue is that the artist engages in politics in Rancière's terms, that is, she re-elaborates the memory and archive of slavery, constructing a sensitive world distinct from the original one and thus opening space for dissent and misunderstanding. To do so, she operates by blurring the positions of rulers/ruled; in addition to the distinctions between public and private.
