Abstract

In this essay I develop a reflection on the philosophical anthropology of
the Montaigne Essays, pointing out the centrality that the recognition of the Other
in its singularity and difference assumes for the construction of Montaigne’s painting
of himself. From this perspective, I underscore the importance of the discovery
of the native people of the New World for the development of the montaignian
criticism of the human condition, bringing to light the relevance of his thinking in
the present reflection of colonization and decolonization.
