Abstract

The essay, as created by Montaigne, is a method capable of examining
and correcting itself. However, the French thinker avoids – for several reasons – to
bring the discussion about the definition of his concepts to the forefront of his text.
This is what we intend to do here from the analysis of fundamental notions for
the structuring and development of essayistic philosophy, which are linked in the
Essays to the representation of the New World and the Renaissance Amerindian
peoples. Following this path, the present article aims at displaying the Montaignian
cannibal’s image as an important element in the exposition and development of
fundamental notions for the essayistic philosophy, and conversely to show how
these notions inform and shape that image.
