Abstract

In his later years, Kitaro Nishida came up with the idea of a philosophical system called “creative monadology”, which incorporated the Prajna system of Mahayana Buddhist thought. This was a further development of the “logic of place”
that he constructed himself. The purpose of this article is to bring to light human aesthetic creative activity in that “place”. In doing so, this work has taken a cue from the method of polyphony in Western music to bring a new development to Eastern
philosophy, and has highlighted the possibility of a Japanese idea of polyphony. This understanding of polyphony goes beyond the realm of music and is discussed in traditional Japanese compositional forms of renga and renku. What must be
developed in the wake of this theory is the construction of a monadological and polyphonic philosophy, that is, a polyphonic monadology.

Keywords: Kitaro Nishida, logic of place, creative monadology, polyphony,
polyphonic monadology.
