Abstract

The present essay aims at analyzing two fundamental developments in Gilberto Freyre’s sociology, which are connected, in one way or another, to the rich dialogue he maintained, throughout his life and work, with India, its history, personalities and philosophical-sociological studies. These are: (i) the pioneer postulation of an Asian and, in particular, an Indian component in the formation of Brazilian identity(ies), as a result of Brazil’s colonial insertion in the Portuguese empire and its Indian ramifications through Goa; (ii) and an overture towards a resignified regionalism, in the form of a localist plurality of relatively autonomous character, that could be traced, to a large extent, to his comparative studies with other postcolonial formations, especially India, in close partnership with Indian personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) and sociologist Radhakamal Mukerjee (1889–1968).
