From the critique of consensual realism to the defense of democratic realism in Jacques Rancière

The article investigates the understanding of “realism” in Jacques Rancière, starting from the contrast between “consensual realism” and what can be called “democratic realism”. Through the analysis of works from different periods of the author's production, especially Disagreement (1995), the study maps connections between politics, aesthetics, event, and historicity. It argues that Rancière rejects both historical necessity and the cult of the unrepresentable, defending a real linked to dissent, excess, and the equality of “non-existent existences”.
