This is a translation of a short article by Ernst Cassirer, published in 1932, in which the author draws a parallel between Goethe’s poetic and scientific impulses, grounded in the notion of spiritual force and the pivotal role of imagination as a central category for both activities. The introduction to the translation aims to shed light on Cassirer’s interest in Goethe and to outline the motivations behind the text, as well as the contours of a minor dispute among scholars of Cassirer’s work regarding how the uomo universale of Weimar is interpreted by the philosopher of symbolic forms.
