About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Critical Theory is nowadays a consolidated academic field, producing debates about different themes and working as an intersection of different areas in academic research, such as philosophy, sociology, economy, psychoanalyses and history. However, in Brazil a journal dedicated specifically to stimulate the debate about its own motives and issues was still absent. The aim of Dissonância: Critical Theory Journal is to fill this gap, as a forum for debate and a publishing platform for current research on historical and contemporary issues.

When one asks what is Critical Theory, it is possible to answer in many different ways, presenting all the diverse senses of this expression along the history of philosophy and the humanities in general. As we understand them, the purpose of the different critical models is to point out the tendencies to overcome or resist existing forms of social domination. There is a specific time diagnosis and a specific critical model to each historical moment, to each interdisciplinary consortium, and often to each author who claims herself or himself to be a critical theorist.

During the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21th century, new generations of researchers, not only from the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt, but also from other institutes, universities and centers of research, have been producing research and time diagnoses either by actualizing existing critical models or by creating new ones. Dissonância: Critical Theory Journal intends to contribute to the discussion not only of the interdisciplinary work carried out in the Institute for Social Research headed by Horkheimer in the first half of the last century, but also of all theoretical frameworks that – instead of merely describing the given traits of capitalistic modern society – produce time diagnoses and critiques of the existing social situation.

The journal publishes double-blind peer-reviewed articles, invited essays, book reviews, translations, and interviews dealing with matters relevant to Critical Theory in a broad sense.

Peer Review Process

Submissions are accepted regardless of the authors' titles, as long as they fit into the journal's thematic scope, comply with the formatting rules of the journal, and meet a minimum quality standard, which is internally evaluated by the Editorial Board in an initial screening.

The evaluation of the articles and book reviews follows the double-blind peer review procedure. Each article is submitted to two reviewers, who may reject, accept or suggest revisions to the submission.

We use the Turnitin tool to check against plagiarism.

Periodicity

The journal is published once a year and also in the AOP modality.

AOP - Advance Online Publication:

The AOP system is used for contributions that are finalized before the corresponding volume is published in its entirety.

In the AOP version, the pages of the text are numbered from 1 to the final page number. The text will be included as part of the next volume when the entire volume is released. On this occasion, the text will get a new version indicating the corresponding vol., n. and page numbers, without any change in its content.

The aim of the AOP modality is to accelerate the publication of approved submissions, which become available immediately after the editorial process is concluded, without having to wait for the completion of the other texts that will compose the final version of the volume in question.

Observation: we use the nomenclature "Advance Online Publication" instead of "Ahead of Print", which is more common, because Dissonância, being an electronic journal, does not have a printed version.
