Abstract

This paper presents some features of the concept of imagination in Herbert Marcuse’s work, especially in three moments: Philosophy and critical theory (1937), Eros and civilization (1955) and One-dimensional man (1964). The presentation’s goal is not exhausting all possibilities of analyses concerning the concept of imagination in these three works, but rather highlight some characteristics which may allow forging a dialogue between Marcuse and Roberto Schwarz and his texts Ideias fora do lugar and Um mestre na periferia do capitalismo, and the Brazilian ideological life, embodied by Machado de Assis’ characters.
